The Free Black Chesapeake Project began as a poster presentation for the 2022 DC History Conference. The poster depicted the locations of pre- Civil War Free Black communities along the Chesapeake watershed. In 2023, with support from The Creativity Foundation, I brought the poster project to life in a public program that combined history exploration with art-making. I gathered an intergenerational cohort of learners and creatives in Washington, DC. We learned about the local history of pre-Civil War communities of Free Blacks and then artistically responded to that history. Participants were guided through the process of creating art that meditates on what it might’ve been like to live for a day in Free Black Chesapeake. The month-long cohort culminated with a public sharing of their art, a screening of a film inspired by our time together, and a Chesapeake food history experience! In the summer of 2024, with support from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, I facilitated a pop-up liberation series at DC public libraries across the city.
